If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind, historic community, search no further than this charming neighborhood in the Washington East/ Sabine area of Houston. Located inside the 610 Loop in Houston’s Sixth Ward Historic District, Washington East/Sabine is home to some of the oldest neighborhoods in Houston. The area features some newer builds as well as a large concentration of Victorian homes built between 1854 and 1935 that remain protected under The National Register of Historic Places.
Nestled west of Downtown Houston, Washington East/Sabine is bounded by Union Street, Sabine Street, State Street, and Sawyer Street where many types of 19th century homes can be found. Early, classic home features such as full-length porches, cottages, gables, stained glass windows, and columns are scattered among more modern bungalow type homes of the early 20th century.
In 1837, Houston was developed into ten wards, to allow for expansion. The Houston Texas Central Railroad, developed in 1850, saw large numbers of settlers from Germany, Ireland, England, and the northern parts of the United States. By 1874, the area became more industrialized, and a part of the Fourth Ward expanded into the Sixth Ward. Today, the Historic Sixth Ward is a perfect combination of early charm and new development.
Efforts to maintain its history and preserve the old neighborhoods continue through The Historic Conservation Committee. The nearby Sawyer Yards, part of the Historic Arts District, was once a collection of industrial warehouses. Thoughtfully transformed into art studios, it is now known as one of the largest artist communities in Texas. It won’t take long to find the work of local artists in nearby businesses, galleries, and restaurants.
You’ll feel welcome right away as you make your way around town. Residents of the area often meet at an event called Sixth on 6th at 6:00 p.m. Hosted at various locations around the neighborhood, the casual get-togethers offer opportunities for neighbors to meet and celebrate the charm, diversity, and uniqueness of this special area of Houston. Welcome home!
