Located northwest of Downtown Houston is The Heights, a historic neighborhood and one of the earliest planned communities in Texas. The Heights is a highly walkable area filled with parks, restaurants, shopping, wine bars, and a collection of historic homes including approximately 100 Victorian homes, Bungalows, and other properties that have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Dating back to 1891, when the area was purchased by the Omaha and South Texas Land Company, The Heights was established with streets, parks, schools, and utilities. Considered a streetcar suburb of Houston at the time, residents chose to live in The Heights in order to avoid the big city.
Today, residents and visitors alike enjoy the rich history mixed with newer unique businesses. The historic 19th street, where many of these businesses can be found, offers great boutiques, antique shops with vintage toys, coffee shops, restaurants, and bars. One of the oldest music venues in Houston, The Heights Theater, is located on 19th Street where visitors flock to hear live music. White Oak, or 6th Street boasts the White Oak Music Hall, a concert venue as well as plenty of bars and restaurants. Heights Boulevard is another local favorite where shoppers enjoy Houston-made items, clothing, gifts, and art. Some even consider the Heights Boulevard to be Houston’s best running trail as it offers approximately 2 shaded miles.
There is plenty to do in The Heights. Head to the Heights Bike and Walk Trail to catch some of the best views of the Houston skyline any day of the week. Head to the First Saturday Arts Market along 19th Street, held the first Saturday of every month. The day provides live music from local singers/songwriters, artwork, jewelry, photography, and handcrafted items. While you’re there, enjoy beer and wine, and any number of food trucks. The Heights Mercantile is yet another walkable marketplace that boasts shopping and dining. Head there on a Sunday morning for board game cafes while you sip on locally owned coffee or a specialty bagel.
There is a little something for everyone in The Heights. Check it out for yourself!
